SICMI is strengthening its international presence in the heavy industry supply sector. We recently successfully completed the engineering, delivery, and installation of a PMM 300 MT mobile gantry hydraulic straightening press at the facility of Stadler Stahlguss AG, a prestigious Swiss foundry specializing in the production of steel castings for the railway industry.
The straightening of steel castings is a critical and extremely precise phase: the components installed on the trains must meet strict geometric tolerances to ensure maximum structural safety. To optimize this logistical and production process, the Stadler Stahlguss team (led by Luis Quintero) chose the technological reliability of SICMI's "Made in Italy" manufacturing.
Technical characteristics of the PMM 300 MT mobile gantry press
The hydraulic press supplied was custom-configured to handle and process large railway structural components. The machine's main technical data is as follows:
-
Power (Tonnage): 300 Tons, ideal for effectively acting on the mechanical deformations of industrial castings.
-
Worktop dimensions: An impressive support bench measuring 3000 x 6000 mm.
-
Cylinder stroke and free clearance: 1300 mm stem-to-top clearance with a 700 mm cylinder stroke.
-
Flexible movement (X and Y axes): The mobile gantry boasts a longitudinal travel of 4600 mm, while the cylinder has a lateral travel of 2200 mm. This combination allows the entire table area to be covered without having to move the workpiece.
-
Operating speed: Approach speed of 20 mm/sec and millimetric working speed of 2 mm/sec.
Logistics and Automation: The Benefits of Industrial Straightening
In addition to its power performance and large size, the press installed for Stadler integrates advanced accessories and control systems designed to maximize efficiency and operator safety:
-
Lifting cylinders integrated into the floor: The work table houses 12 retractable hydraulic cylinders (25mm diameter rod, 80mm stroke). This system allows heavy rail components to be slightly lifted directly from the work surface for easier sliding, positioning, or manual rotation.
-
Fixing guides: The top is machined with 4 T-slots of 6 metres each (24 metres in total) for quick and safe anchoring of moulds or straightening dowels.
-
Siemens Digital Control: The press is equipped with a 9" Siemens KTP 900 touchscreen display and a Siemens CPU dedicated to logic programming (up to 100 storable programs). The system reads the cylinder stroke via encoder and the pressure via transducer, ensuring a stopping accuracy of 0,1 mm.
-
Safety and Visual Comfort: The machine is equipped with a simultaneous dual-button remote control for safe operation and a double row of LED lights with integrated anti-glare protection on the structure. To maintain optimal thermal performance of the hydraulic system, an air/oil heat exchanger with a decompression valve has been installed.
A turnkey project from design to testing
Installation in Switzerland required meticulous logistical planning, managing the exceptional transport of large components (such as the base and the mobile structural gantry) and lifting them to the workshop using high-capacity industrial cranes. SICMI's specialized technicians oversaw the entire mechanical assembly, electrical and hydraulic system connection, and performed final testing and staff training directly at the customer's facility.
This important achievement in the Swiss railway sector confirms SICMI's ability to serve as a key engineering partner for large international foundries and steel mills seeking robust, precise, and highly customized machinery.
